We started using the phrase ‘corporate refugees’ to describe the super talented people we saw coming out of larger organisations with a dream of running their own business. They need efficient backroom systems, effortless compliance and some energetic business planning, which is exactly what we do.
Once upon a time, David and Derek became corporate refugees when they escaped from a large accounting firm in London so we recognise the impulse to set out on an adventure and seek your fortune.
Typically corporate refugees are skilled specialists in sales, marketing, HR, operations and now sell their services as consultants.
They have often left large organisational environments where many of the daily and monthly business tasks were done for them, for example payroll, VAT, expense claims, reporting.
When they set out on their own they have to wear all of the hats in the business: finance, sales, marketing, operations, HR. We act as part of their support network, keeping their numbers in shape and acting as their virtual business partner; we also act as a sounding board whenever they need us.
The reason we understand the corporate refugee journey is because we have trodden this path ourselves. And when you take the road less travelled you will find it easier with a trusted companion.
I’ve been working with Derek for around eight years and when we first met I was surprised to find out that not all accountants are dull! He is interesting, intuitive and aware of subtext. This is an invaluable skill because when you are a small business you don’t know what you don’t know; Derek is usually a few paces ahead which is really powerful.
